Local Footy and Netball players ready to go for long weekend

Head of AFL WIMMERA MALLEE Jason Muldoon has said that they're hoping this long weekend senior footy and netball will resume, as we know it all depends on daily COVID figures in Melbourne.

Muldoon says unfortunately at this stage - if Melbourne rules remain unchanged..any players living in Greater Melbourne wont be able to travel out.

Speaking on Saturdays 1089 3WM sports Show "The Shirtfront" Muldoon said "As of Friday all levels can go back to training, Footballers and netballer's are right to go with full contact allowed, the biggest change though is the spectators..there's not allowed to be more than 50 spectators in a venue, so unfortunately I understand it is a social event for many people, they rock up to watch the girls and boys train and have a drink and socialise but for the foreseeable future we have to put a stop on that, the boys and girls can certainly train - pretty much unchanged, however there are some changes to netball numbers so I'd advise netballer's to double check their protocols".

Mr Muldoon hopes sport will go ahead across the long weekend..

"As far as planning goes our expectation is we're planning towards being able to play on the long weekend..now the only thing that will upset that is obviously if figures keep growing in Melbourne and the government make some decisions to stop it,.

The unfortunate thing about that is players - both footballers and netballer's who live in the greater Melbourne area - without any changes at this stage wont be able to travel on the long weekend, so that will certainly upset a few teams, as there are a few teams that have players who play in our region who live in Melbourne".

Yesterday the state government recorded 2 positive Covid cases with decisions on opening up further in regional areas and the lockdown in Melbourne hinging on results received over the next 2 to 3 days.
